What does a Police Officer do anyways?
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word police officer? Honestly for me what I imagine is a car crash, an over speeding car and even a terrorist attacking a country. What a police officer does, is pretty straightforward, they enforce the law of a community, and ensure the safety of the citizens and property. If something of yours gets stolen, if someone gets murdered or even if your car gets crashed on the winter ice, you will most likely call the police for help. So long story short, a police officer ensure the safety of the citizens and property.
Job Requirements:
Basically, all you need to be a police officer is you as a high school graduate must complete a police academy training program, and an associate’s degree in criminology or criminal justice.
Obtain the Necessary Education:
You definitely need a high school diploma or a GED and that’s the minimum level. After that, you need a College degree that may appeal to the potential employee which is required by some law enforcement. Though an associate or bachelor degree program in Criminology, police science, public administration and criminal justice. Undergraduates can obtain helpful knowledge and skills to apply to a career in law enforcement.
Submit an Application to the Police Department:
A Complete application needs to be submitted to the police department in you desired work location. (In the same location you would like to work in.) Once you have been chosen, you will be put in a pool of eligible candidates for a police officer opening. Depending on you hiring situations, you might immediately be moved into a training program. On the other hand, the application, Prospective hopefuls must pass fitness, drug and lie detecting tests, with a civil service test that ensures your good enough to be a police officer.
Graduate from a Police Academy Training Program:
You an applicant need to complete a rigorous training program, from where you will go to Police academy training which generally lasts 12-14 weeks, which is about 2-3 months. Some Programs Combine Classroom study with physical training. A Coursework Covers Law and Civil rights, with proper Police protocol and responses. The physical aspect includes Self-defense techniques, proper firearm usage so you learn how to defend yourself and how to use a weapon or firearm.
Actively work to obtain promotions:
After completing the training program, According to BLS, with the right Experience and Training. Police officers can choose a specialization in narcotics or juvenile enforcement. Some Promotions that are available to the Police officer are Captain, lieutenant, detectives and other. But best of all according to BLS, a police officer can receive new vocational opportunities at a FEDERAL LEVEL.
